GPA calculator

Your GPA is the average of your grade points, weighted by credits: an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a B+ is 3.3. Enter each class to get your GPA, then add honors and AP weighting or your past GPA if you need them.

Classes this term

High school classes are usually 1 credit (or 0.5 for a semester). College classes use credit hours, often 3 or 4.

Add your previous GPA for a cumulative GPA

Both numbers are on your transcript or report card. Use the same kind of GPA (weighted or unweighted) as above.

Letter grades to GPA points

The 4.0 scale most U.S. high schools and colleges start from. Schools vary, so your transcript’s scale wins.

How GPA is calculated

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)Five 1-credit classes with A, B+, A−, B and A: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 5 = 18.0 ÷ 5 = 3.60.

  1. Points per classLook up each letter’s points and multiply by the class’s credits. A B+ in a 3-credit class is 3.3 × 3 = 9.9 points.
  2. Add honors or AP pointsOnly for a weighted GPA. Many districts add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so an A in AP counts as 5.0.
  3. Divide by creditsAdd up all the points and divide by the total credits. Your GPA is usually shown with two decimals.

Weighted GPA is school-specific

The honors and AP bonus is not a national standard. Howard County Public Schools (Maryland) Policy 8020 adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, but only for grades of A, B or C. St. Johns County Schools (Florida) adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, dual enrollment, AICE and IB. This calculator adds the bonus to every grade except F; change the numbers or leave weighting off to match your school. Colleges often recalculate GPA their own way, as the College Board explains.

Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + this term’s points) ÷ (previous credits + this term’s credits)A 3.40 over 12 credits plus a 3.60 term over 5 credits: (40.8 + 18.0) ÷ 17 = 3.46.

Questions students ask

Is an A+ worth more than 4.0?
On the scale used here, no: an A+ and an A are both 4.0, as on the Indiana University scale cited above. If your school counts an A+ differently, check your school’s grading policy or transcript key and go by that.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses only the letter grades, so 4.0 is the top. A weighted GPA adds points for harder classes like honors and AP, so it can go above 4.0. Each school decides whether and how much to weight.
Do pass/fail classes count?
Usually not. Pass and satisfactory grades carry credit but no grade points, so leave them out. An F normally counts as 0.0 points with full credits.
How do I find my GPA from percentages?
Turn each percent into a letter first (on the common scale, 90 and up is an A, 80 to 89 a B, and so on), then use this calculator. Your school’s cutoffs may differ.
